Students appointed as ex officio members of HFM BOCES Board of Education

Student voices will soon have a seat at the table at HFM BOCES, as two students have been appointed ex officio members of the HFM BOCES Board of Education.

Edward Oare of the Greater Amsterdam School District and Christian Majewski of Fonda-Fultonville Central School District were introduced during the HFM BOCES Board of Education meeting on Sept. 30.

A law that took effect in 2025 requires all school districts and Boards of Cooperative Educational Services across New York State to appoint at least one ex officio student board member. These student representatives attend public meetings and provide student perspectives on issues discussed by the board.

Oare, a junior at HFM PTECH, is enrolled in the Fisheries and Wildlife Technologies pathway. At PTECH, he is a member of the school’s drama club and serves as treasurer. In his community, Oare participates in the Amsterdam Police Explorers, a youth law enforcement program focused on training, mentorship, community service and career exploration in policing. He hopes to one day work as an Environmental Conservation officer.

“It means a lot to me to be nominated and chosen for this opportunity,” said Oare. “I think my leadership skills and honesty will help me be successful in this role.”

Majewski is a senior enrolled in the HFM Career and Technical Education (CTE) Cosmetology program. At Fonda-Fultonville, he participates in varsity football and basketball. He also enjoys creating pottery in the school’s advanced art class.

After graduation, Majewski plans to attend SUNY Cortland, where he will study criminology while pursuing a minor in business and finance. He also plans to obtain his cosmetology license.

“I’m very thankful for the opportunity to be selected,” said Majewski. “This is a great opportunity for me to grow and to be a voice for students.”

Student board members serve in an advisory role and are not permitted to vote or attend executive sessions. To be eligible, students must be enrolled in high school for at least one year.
