December 24, 2018 | Filed in Archive

HFM BOCES will host two intake and orientation events in January for adults interested in learning English as a second language. Each event consists of two days; students participate for three hours each day.

Students with intermediate level skills will be eligible for workforce readiness classes focusing on entry level healthcare jobs.

The morning event will be held Wednesday, Jan. 2 and Thursday, Jan. 3 from 9 a.m. to noon. Students must arrive no later than 9 a.m. and plan to stay until noon. The evening event will be held Thursday, Jan. 3 and Tuesday, Jan. 8. Students must arrive no later than 5:30 p.m. and plan to stay until 8:30 p.m. The events will occur at the Amsterdam Literacy Zone, which is housed in the United Presbyterian Church at 25 Church St.

Students must arrive on time, with a picture ID and be prepared to stay for approximately three hours. During orientation, students will learn about the program, register for class and participate in an assessment of their listening and speaking skills.

Class assignments will be made after the assessment is completed. Beginner morning classes meet Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9 a.m. to noon. Intermediate morning classes meet Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. to  noon. All levels of evening classes meet Tuesday and Thursday from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Instruction will focus on listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. Civics education, including U.S. history, government, citizenship, geography, holidays, and culture will be integrated into the program.

Students are expected to attend class every day as scheduled. Classes are offered without cost to the student. This is possible through funding for adult learners through the New York State Education Department. Classes are available to adult learners age 18 and older.

Intermediate students will have an opportunity to join workforce preparation classes. These classes will help job seekers prepare for employment in three areas: healthcare; manufacturing; and warehousing & transportation. Classes may meet morning or afternoons.

Individuals interested in joining class must attend an orientation event. To reserve a seat or for additional information, please call (518) 736-4340. Voicemail is available 24 hours a day. Callers should leave their name, age, mailing address and phone number. A seat can also be reserved by sending the same information via email to alce@hfmboces.org. Additional information can be found on the Amsterdam Literacy Zone’s Facebook Page.
