The event, held at the HFM BOCES Career and Technical Education (CTE) Center, brought together component school board members, district leaders, and BOCES administrative staff to celebrate the Fonda-based, family-run operation.

Situated on 100 acres and in operation since 1985, Hilltop Acres Farm is known for its high-quality breeding stock of Black Angus cattle and Texel sheep. For the past seven years, the farm has played an active role in workforce development by supporting students enrolled in the HFM CTE Animal and Veterinary Science and PTECH programs.

Owners Clark and Gretchen Subik regularly connect with students through mentorship, career-readiness workshops, and internship opportunities, offering hands-on exposure to agricultural careers. The farm also hosts field trips focused on renewable and sustainable farming practices, helping students broaden their understanding of modern agricultural operations.

HFM BOCES Director of Workforce Development and CTE Michael DiMezza highlighted the farm’s partnership and commitment to student success.

“Hilltop Acres Farm exemplifies what a true workforce development partner looks like,” said DiMezza. “For years, they have gone above and beyond to open their doors to our students, providing meaningful, real-world experiences in agriculture and animal science. Their dedication plays a vital role in preparing students across our region for future success, and we are proud to recognize them for their outstanding partnership.”

HFM BOCES Assistant Superintendent for Educational Services Jay DeTraglia commented on the farm’s strong partnership and contributions to the organization.

“Hilltop Acres has demonstrated an exceptional commitment to student learning through its ongoing support of both our Career and Technical Education and PTECH programs,” said DeTraglia. “Their willingness to actively engage with students, provide hands-on learning opportunities, and serve as mentors has significantly enhanced our instructional programs, and we’re so thankful for this meaningful collaboration.”

In addition to honoring the outstanding workforce development partner, the meeting also celebrated the contributions of two members of the HFM BOCES administrative team. District Superintendent Dr. David Ziskin and Assistant Superintendent for Educational Services Jay DeTraglia were recognized for their decades of service to public education. Both have announced their plans to retire at the end of the academic year after each having served in public education more than 30 years.

The evening also highlighted HFM CTE Cybersecurity and Computer Technology instructor Sean Mahon. Mahon was recently featured by WNYT/News Channel 13 as one of its 2026 Top Teachers, an honor that celebrates outstanding teaching, creativity, and a lasting positive impact on students’ lives.

HFM PTECH administrators, Principal Dr. James Niedermeier and Administrative Coordinator Erika Haggerty, were also in attendance, providing updates on new educational pathways being added for next school year. The event concluded with several key administrative updates, including a State of the BOCES address by Dr. David Ziskin and an overview of next year’s proposed administrative budget.

Additionally, the nominations of proposed Board of Education member Elizabeth (Betsy) Batchelor and the re-election of Carolyn Wilcox were announced. Component school district board members will have the opportunity to elect the candidates later this month.

Guests enjoyed a gourmet dinner prepared by students in the CTE Culinary Arts and Foundations of Food Services programs, showcasing student talent through a diverse menu featuring dishes such as beef tenderloin, baked cod, flourless chocolate cake, and seasonal mocktails.
