HFM CTE Alumna Desiree Ives Earns PA Rookie of the Year at Mount Sinai Hospital

Desiree Ives, a former HFM Career & Technical Education (CTE) New Visions Health Careers student, was recently named the Mount Sinai Health System’s 2025 PA Rookie of the Year in New York City. A 2016 graduate of Gloversville High School, Ives received the honor earlier this month during a ceremony celebrating Physician Assistant Week.

Now a Physician Assistant with the Institute for Critical Care Medicine at The Mount Sinai Hospital, Desiree plays a vital role on the Rapid Response Team, as well as in the Medical and Cardiac Intensive Care Units. In her first year as a PA, she has distinguished herself through exceptional clinical skill, professionalism, and teamwork.

“This award is incredibly meaningful,” said Ives. “It validates the hard work and growth I’ve experienced in my first year and reminds me why I love what I do. It’s also a reflection of the amazing support and teamwork around me.”

Her nomination described her as a remarkable clinician whose drive and dedication have been evident from day one. Entering a high-acuity critical care environment alongside seasoned nurse practitioners, Desiree embraced the challenge with determination, immersing herself in procedures, studying best practices independently, and consistently seeking feedback to grow.

Furthermore, her attention to detail, calm demeanor in emergencies, and compassionate approach to patient care have made her an invaluable member of the team. Whether mastering ventilator strategies, hemodynamic monitoring, or medication titration, Desiree quickly applies new knowledge to improve outcomes. She fosters collaboration, communicates with empathy, and exemplifies integrity and accountability.

Reflecting on her journey, Ives credits her time in the HFM CTE New Visions Health Careers program for sparking her passion and setting her path in motion.

“New Visions was where it all started,” Ives said of her time in the HFM CTE program. “It gave me direction and confidence. Shadowing professionals and learning in clinical settings as a high school student made everything real and helped me see that medicine was my path.”

HFM CTE New Visions Health Careers instructor Erika Bucenec remembered Ives as someone destined for success.

“Desiree always stood out as a student and was deeply committed to learning and caring for others,” said Bucenec. “Her curiosity, empathy, and work ethic were evident even back then, and it’s no surprise to see her thriving in such a demanding and impactful role.”

Ives also offered advice to students considering healthcare careers.

“Lean into every opportunity,” she said. “Be curious, ask questions, and don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone. Healthcare is about compassion and teamwork. The technical skills will come, but empathy and resilience are what truly make a difference.”
