PTECH Internship Spotlight: Meet Donny Joseph

January 30, 2026 | Filed in Archive, HFM PTECH, HFM Top Stories

HFM PTECH senior Donny Joseph’s internships in the Emergency and Urgent Care departments at St. Mary’s Healthcare really helped her learn the basics, including taking vitals, running rapid diagnostic tests, and dealing with patient care. She feels the experience got her thinking on her feet.

“The emergency department was fast-paced and always moving, so I had to always be moving,” said Donny. “And I started thinking about what goes through a nurse’s mind and how they navigate their day in that kind of environment.”

Mikala Foster, LPN at Urgent Care, really enjoyed the experience of working with student interns that have come her way and hopes to see more.

Donny Joseph works with staff at Urgent Care to run diagnostic testing.

“I really like teaching people what I love to do,” said Foster. “I’ve worked in the medical field since I was 18 years old and I’m a hands-on learner myself. I love that Donny was willing to jump right in and get to it.”

Donny plans to pursue a career in the psychology field, having an interest in working with teenagers as a school psychologist, and potentially moving on to criminal psychology. After graduation she hopes to attend either SUNY Albany or SUNY Oswego. Her time at St. Mary’s was a welcoming experience and one she knows she’ll feel confident returning to if given the opportunity.

“I was feeling nervous and maybe a little awkward when I was in the emergency room, but one of the staff members was really patient and welcoming with me. She helped me feel comfortable,” said Donny. “Knowing the environment and people would make it easy to apply for a position here.”

Hospitals offer a myriad of job opportunities in the medical field. HFM BOCES is proud to partner with our local healthcare facilities and showcase the numerous internships our students take part in each year.
