Nancy Turnbull Honored with HFM Service Award for Nearly Four Decades of Dedication

During its annual Opening Day celebration on Tuesday, Sept. 2, HFM BOCES proudly recognized longtime educator Nancy Turnbull as the recipient of this year’s HFM Service Award, honoring her nearly 40 years of service and unwavering commitment to students and staff.

Established in 1994, the HFM Service Award celebrates individuals who exemplify the organization’s vision, mission, and core beliefs. Turnbull received the award to a standing ovation from an audience of administrators, teachers, and staff gathered at the HFM BOCES main campus.

“Nancy’s career reflects what it means to be a true servant leader—dedicated to students, supportive of colleagues, and unwavering in her belief in the power of education,” said HFM BOCES District Superintendent Dr. David Ziskin. “Her work has left a legacy that continues to shape who we are as a BOCES.”

Turnbull began her career with HFM BOCES in 1985 and retired at the end of the last school year. Throughout her tenure, she devoted herself to supporting students with special needs, playing a pivotal role in the 12:1:4 program for the majority of her career.

“It’s a tremendous honor. It was a lot of hard work, but I wouldn’t have done anything differently,” said an elated Turnbull. “I always tried to carry out the mission of BOCES to the best of my ability.”

Dan Salvagni, Director of Special Education, praised Turnbull’s compassionate and high-expectation approach to teaching.

“Nancy embraced every challenge with grace and care. She made each student feel valued and special. She will be greatly missed at this BOCES and in the teaching profession. Her dedication to students with disabilities in this region will be hard to replace.”

Beyond the classroom, Turnbull served as president of the BOCES Teachers’ Association, where she was known for her integrity, advocacy, and collaborative spirit, always seeking outcomes to benefit both students and staff.

Opening Day also featured remarks from Dr. Ziskin reaffirming HFM BOCES’ shared purpose and theory of action. The group also learned about updates on the region’s 10-year plan and its alignment with the Portrait of a Graduate initiative. Following the general session, staff participated in division meetings and trainings. An employee orientation was also conducted for more than 50 new staff members throughout the organization.
