The morning event will be held Wednesday, Sept. 4 and Thursday, September 5 beginning at 9 a.m. and ending at 12 noon. Students must be ready to begin at 9 a.m. and stay until 12 noon. The evening event will be held Thursday, September 5 and Tuesday, Sept. 10 beginning at 5:30 p.m. and ending at 8:30 p.m. Students must be ready to begin at 5:30 p.m.  The events will occur at the Amsterdam Literacy Zone, which is housed in the upper level of the United Presbyterian Church at 25 Church St.

Students must arrive a few minutes before the start time, with a picture ID and be prepared to stay for 3 hours. During orientation, students will learn about the program, register for class and participate in an assessment of their listening and speaking skills.

Class assignments will be made after the assessment is completed. Teachers will utilize technology to help students with varying abilities develop reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. The morning beginner class will meet Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. The morning Intermediate class will meet Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. The evening class will meet Tuesday and Thursday from 5:30-8:30 p.m.

Instruction will focus on listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. Civics education, including U.S. history, government, citizenship, geography, holidays, and culture will be integrated into the program. Students will also learn digital  literacy skills from using technology in the classroom.

Students are expected to attend class every day as scheduled. Classes are offered without cost to the student. This is possible through funding for adult learners through the New York State Education Department. Classes are available to adult learners age 18 and older.
