Three HFM PTECH students have been honored for their academic achievements by being inducted into the SUNY Fulton-Montgomery Community College’s chapter of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) national honor society, Alpha Alpha Upsilon.

Yadier Martinez, Xavier Grieme (not pictured) and Chris Szabo (not pictured) were recently inducted into the SUNY Fulton-Montgomery Community College’s chapter of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) national honor society, Alpha Alpha Upsilon.

The ceremony, which was held on Thursday, Oct. 9 in the Rao Theater on the FMCC campus, inducted Xavier Grieme, Yadier Martinez and Chris Szabo.

Fellow PTECH student and current Alpha Alpha Upsilon president Hailey Hallenbeck led the ceremony and welcomed the new inductees with words of encouragement and praise.

“I want to acknowledge all of you for your outstanding academic achievements and also for the steadfast commitment you have made to your personal goals,” said Hallenbeck.

Xavier Grieme is a PTECH senior from Amsterdam pursuing an A.A.S. in Robotics and Systems Technology. He is a motivated student who is known for his kindness, reliability and willingness to lend a hand to classmates and staff alike. Grieme has become a confident advocate for himself and others.

Yadier Martinez is a PTECH junior from Amsterdam and an active member of the college community. Since 7th grade he has been a participant in STEP, a program that increases college access and participation in math, science, technology, health, and licensed professions. Martinez is pursuing an A.A.S. in Computer Information Systems.

Chris Szabo is a PTECH senior from Canajoharie who exemplifies academic excellence and determination. He has maintained a 4.0 GPA throughout his time at FMCC, beginning with his College in the High School courses as early as 9th and 10th grade. Szabo is currently pursuing an A.A.S. degree in Health Studies and plans to continue his education after graduating this spring.

Phi Theta Kappa Honors Society, the international honor society of two-year colleges, has been dedicated to fostering the success of high-achieving students for over a century. Students eligible for membership must complete at least 12 hours of associate degree coursework while maintaining a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher. Membership offers students an array of opportunities, from scholarships and professional skill development to leadership training and career exploration.

PTECH, or Pathways in Technology Early College High School, is a 6-year program that functions like a hybrid between high school and college. It incorporates project based learning and professional skills training as students work toward their 2-year degree from SUNY Fulton-Montgomery or SUNY Cobleskill at no cost to their families.
