Regional Educators Convene to Advance NY’s Portrait of a Graduate Vision

Educational leaders from the HFM BOCES region recently gathered for a workshop aimed at better preparing students for college, careers, and civic life focusing beyond traditional assessments. Held on Thursday, Sept. 18 at the HFM BOCES campus, the event welcomed nearly 70 educators.

The event focused on New York’s recently adopted Portrait of a Graduate, which outlines a comprehensive set of skills and attributes that students should cultivate from early childhood through high school graduation. These competencies emphasize not only academic achievement, but also personal growth, civic readiness, and adaptability in a rapidly changing world.

The workshop was the first in a series of four professional development events planned this year. These sessions are designed to support district leaders in aligning their local strategies with the goals of the Portrait of a Graduate. The event was facilitated by the Successful Practices Network (SPN), a national nonprofit organization founded by Dr. Bill Daggett. SPN specializes in providing professional learning, coaching, and resources to help schools implement rigorous, relevant, and resilient educational models through data-informed practices.

In July, the New York State Board of Regents adopted the Portrait of a Graduate framework for students entering ninth grade in 2029. Until then, current graduation requirements will remain in place as the Regents continue to refine and approve specific changes.

New York State Education Department Commissioner Betty A. Rosa described the Portrait of a Graduate as “a blueprint for future graduates, where academic excellence meets the ever-evolving world outside the classroom.” She added, “It paints a picture of students who are not just knowledgeable, but also curious, compassionate, and capable of turning challenges into opportunities. It is a testament to the belief that education is not just about learning facts, but about becoming the kind of person who can change the world for the better.
