Tell us a little about your background. headshot of Vanessa Stark

I grew up in Amsterdam, NY. I earned a Bachelor of Arts in English from Stony Brook University, and a master’s degree in Adult Learning from SUNY Empire State College. Before PTECH, I worked at Glenmont Job Corps Academy for 6 years, and at Albany High School for 4 years.

Why did you choose teaching as a profession, and what do you enjoy most about it?

I’ve always loved learning (especially English class), and I always knew I wanted to make a difference in the lives of others. Combining these two passions led me to teaching. The thing I enjoy most is hearing what teenagers think. They have a fresh and relevant perspective and have some amazing ideas. I learn something new every day!

 Why teach at PTECH?

I am so happy to be part of such an amazing program. The students here are motivated and dedicated, and I love being around such great energy. I’m really excited to help my students meet their academic and career goals by teaching reading and writing skills.

What are some of your interests outside of work?

I like camping, traveling, trying new things, and community theatre. I love to spend time with my family and my friends.

If you were able to talk to your 15-year-old self about life, careers and happiness, what advice would you give?

I think I’d tell myself that she could achieve more than she thinks she can and encourage her to play to her strengths instead of stressing over her perceived weaknesses.
