Physical Education Teacher

Tell us about your background.Allyson Warren

I grew up in Amsterdam, New York, and graduated from Amsterdam High School. Then, I attended SUNY Brockport, where I earned a Bachelor of Science in physical education with a concentration in teaching.

I earned my master’s in education from SUNY Potsdam. I am permanently certified to teach physical education in New York for K-12.

I started working for HFM BOCES in 2001 and have worked at schools in Fonda-Fultonville, Canajoharie, Gloversville, Johnstown, Edinburgh and at the Career and Technical Center.

Why did you choose education as a career?

I knew I wanted to be a teacher from a very young age. The subjects that I wanted to teach seemed to change over the years from math to science to English to physical education, but the desire to work with children always stayed with me.

I had many excellent teachers over the years, and they truly inspired me to become a teacher.  They inspired me through their words, their actions and their ability to encourage me during difficult times when academic topics were, at times, hard to grasp.

What are your interests outside of work?

My interests outside of school include spending time with my god-daughter, Karina, spending time with friends, riding my bicycle, walking, hiking, playing tennis, working out, cooking and baking, reading, traveling, gardening, listening to music and going to live performances.

What advice would you give your 15-year-old self today?

Think about what you really love to do — what brings you joy and happiness. Then figure out what career path you would follow that would allow you to continue doing the things that bring you joy and happiness. As a bonus, someone will reward you with a salary. This is what happened for me when I chose teaching as my career path.
