COVID Testing Q&A

1. Why are BOCES programs preparing to test students and staff for COVID-19?

Based on current trends, it appears possible that our region may be designated a Yellow, Orange or Red zone in the near future under the state’s Cluster Action Initiative. Should our region receive such a designation, schools would be required to test a percentage of students and staff to maintain in-person instruction. At the current time, testing is not required. HFM BOCES is preparing for the possibility, however, as we remain committed to providing in-person learning to the greatest extent possible in order to provide the best academic, social and emotional benefits for our students.

2. What type of testing will be administered?

If testing is necessary, our plan is to use the BinaxNow rapid testing, which is a minimally invasive shallow swab test that involves a swab (similar to a Q-tip) going in the front of the nose.

3. Will everyone who consents be tested?

Not necessarily. Only a certain percentage of students and staff would need to be tested. Percentages vary based on the zone. Schools in Yellow Zones, for instance, are required to test 20 percent of in-person students, staff and teachers over the course of a month.

4. Will students and staff who are currently all-remote be part of the testing?

No. All-remote students and employees will not be tested and should not complete the consent form.

5. What happens if enough students/employees do not consent to be tested?

Those programs would need to transition to all-remote instruction. It is our hope to have strong cooperation so that we can keep our programs open for in-person instruction.

6. Where and when will the testing take place?

Testing will take place at your child’s BOCES program. If tests will be administered, parents will be notified in advance.

7. When will results of the tests be available?

Tests results will be available 15 minutes after the test is administered.

8. Can parents be there while their child(ren) are being tested?

Due to the need to maintain social distancing and limit visitors in our programs, this will not be possible. If you have any special concerns, please contact the administrator at your child’s program.

9. What happens if a test comes back positive?

We will notify the family and the student will be sent home and referred for follow-up with their medical provider. In the event of positive results, we will follow all of our current protocols regarding working with public health departments regarding contract tracing and quarantining.

10. How long will testing be required?

It’s possible that only one round of testing would be required. If a program’s positivity rate is less than that of the greater community, testing can stop. If the positivity rate is high, more testing may be required.
