Job Description – Substitute Teacher

Job Title: Substitute Teacher
Location: Various buildings within HFM BOCES
Immediate Supervisor: Building or Program Administrator
Pay Scale: Substitute Teacher

Job Description

To replace the regularly appointed teacher in his/her absence. To provide as closely as possible the same successful instructional and learning environment that would exist if the regularly appointed teacher were in attendance. The substitute teacher is responsible for carrying out the lesson plans of the regularly appointed teacher for whom they are substituting.

Essential Functions/Typical Tasks (Illustrative only):

The minimum performance expectations include, but are not limited to, the following functions/tasks:

  • Follows the lesson plan(s) left by the teacher for whom he/she is substituting in accordance with district’s philosophy, goals and objectives.
  • Maintains as fully as possible the established routines and procedures of the school and classroom where assigned.
  • Meets and instructs assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated.
  • Establishes and maintains order in the classroom.
  • Maintains a classroom environment conductive to effective learning.
  • Establishes a climate that promotes fairness and respect.
  • Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, materials, equipment, and facilities.
  • Corrects any student papers assigned during the day.
  • Places students’ paper(s) in regular teacher’s desk.
  • Returns instructional materials and equipment to proper place.
  • Dismisses all students from the classroom before leaving the building.
  • Conducts oneself in a business like and task-oriented manner.
  • Uses positive verbal and non-verbal skills that enhance learning.
  • Models non-discriminatory practices in all activities.
  • Cooperate with school personnel.
  • Maintains confidentiality of all information concerning students, staff, or parent/guardian in any public setting.
  • Assists in upholding and enforcing school rules, administrative regulations, and School Board policies.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by program/building administrator(s) in accordance with school policies and practices.

Position Requirements:

  • Candidate must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Education equivalent to graduation from an accredited high school or General Education Diploma (GED).
  • Home-schooled individuals must have a GED or diploma issued by an accredited school. A bachelor’s degree or higher supersedes the requirement of a high school diploma or GED. If an individual recently obtained a bachelor’s degree (or higher), but the degree is not posted on a transcript yet, then a letter from the college registrar is sufficient.
  • Substitutes with valid teaching certificate: Service may be rendered in any capacity, for any number of days. If employed on more than an itinerant basis, such persons will be employed in an area for which they are certified.
  • Substitutes without a valid certificate, but who are completing collegiate study toward certification at the rate of not less than six semester hours per year: Service may, with approval of the school agency, be rendered in any capacity, for any number of days. If employed on more than an itinerant basis, such persons will be employed in the area for which they are seeking certification.
  • Substitutes without a valid certificate and who are not working toward certification: Service may be rendered for no more than 40 days in a school year.
  • Candidate must agree to fingerprinting and authorize HFM BOCES to conduct a Criminal History Records Search.
    Use of personal electronic equipment is prohibited during class hours.

Occasional travel with students on field trips may be necessary. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels. Visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities. Dexterity of hands and fingers is required to manipulate specialized apparatus and to operate audio-visual and educational training equipment. Occasional travel between work sites may be required. The substitute teacher is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, noise and hazards. Movement of students by wheelchairs and other mechanical devices is required in Special Education classrooms. Instruction to special needs students may occur frequently. Job Description:

To replace regularly appointed teacher’s aides in their absence. To assist the certified teacher and cooperate in a supportive role carrying out developmentally appropriate activities. Promote the health and education of the children and to attend to their safety and welfare.

Essential Functions/Typical Tasks (Illustrative only):

The minimum performance expectations include, but are not limited to, the following functions/tasks:

  • Provide support to the teacher by setting up work areas, displays and exhibits, operating audiovisual equipment, operating educational training equipment and distributing and collecting paper(s) and supplies.
  • Provide instruction/assistance to individual or small groups of students, reinforcing instruction as directed by the teacher.
  • Assist in overseeing student activities; monitor and maintain student behavior in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Perform routine clerical duties in support of classroom activities such as copying and filing instructional material.
  • Keep simple records such as recording grades or completion of homework assignments, as directed by the teacher.
  • Assist teacher in routine classroom preparation duties, such as making student folders, charts, schedules, posters and bulletin boards at the direction of the teacher.
  • Supervise and monitor class when teacher is out of the room.
  • Perform required care-giving/personal hygiene activities for student; i.e., feeding, toileting, dressing, etc.
  • Assist students in moving to restrooms and other areas in the building such as the cafeteria or nurse’s office; assist students during other school related activities as needed including assemblies, field trips and co-curricular activities.
  • Assist students on and off the bus, including students in wheelchairs, lifting students as needed.

Position Summary:

To replace the regularly appointed clerical worker in his/her absence.

Essential Functions/Typical Tasks (Illustrative only):

The minimum performance expectations include, but are not limited to, the following functions/tasks:

  • Greet incoming people, ask the purpose of the visit and allow them access.
  • After entering the school building, the substitute will greet the person, have them sign in, provide a visitor
    pass, and then direct them to the appropriate location.
  • Answer the main phone line for the school building. In doing so, the substitute may need to forward calls. If
    provided, all substitutes should familiarize themselves with the Phone Directory Book.
  • Assist students for various situations. You may need to give directions to the Nurse’s Office, Guidance
    Office, etc. A student may also need to make a phone call or may have missed the bus.
  • Follow school policies for emergencies, including 911 calls. Complete other tasks as assigned by the
    school principal.

Job Description:

“A specialized practice of nursing that advances the well-being, academic success, and life-long achievement of students.” School nurses will facilitate positive student responses to normal growth and development, promote health and safety, intervene with actual and potential health problems, provide case management services an collaborate with other school personnel to build student and family for adaptation, self management, self advocacy, and learning. Duties of a school nurse encompass both health and educational goals.

Essential Functions/Typical Tasks (Illustrative only):

The minimum performance expectations include, but are not limited to, the following functions/tasks:

  • Provide nursing care to injured or those who present acute illnesses.
  • Uses nursing assessment, plan, implement, and evaluate care for student with chronic conditions.
  • Develops nursing care plans/emergency action plans as required .
  • Administers medications and perform health care procedures within the scope of nursing practice as prescribed by an appropriately licensed health care provider.
  • Assesses the overall system of care and develops a plan to insure all health needs are met.
  • With the assistance of other staff members the school nurse develops a plan to respond to emergencies and disasters in the school setting as well as training staff to respond appropriately.
  • Assesses the need for delegation of care to other staff members while considering applicable laws, training, supervision, and evaluation by the school nurse.
  • Provides health screening and referrals for health conditions such as distance acuity, near vision, plus lens, color perception, hearing, scoliosis.
  • The school nurse interprets screening results and makes referrals to parents and/or community agencies when appropriate.
  • Provides physical and emotional safety within the school community.
  • Immunization records are reviewed with deficiencies noted to parents. Local laws must be considered for admissions or exclusions of student.
  • Works closely with Public Health Monitor all cases or possible cases of communicable diseases, reports cases and excludes/re-admits students based on local and district policies.
  • Routinely assesses physical environment of school and provides suggestions to improve health and safety.
  • Provide health information directly to students, groups, or classes to provide guidance or clarification of health curriculum.
  • Collaboration with physical education teachers and food services to provide healthy lifestyles for student and staff as well as health education.
  • School nurses must be included in and take leadership role in the development, execution , and
    evaluation of district health polices.
  • Provide leadership and/or support for staff wellness programs.
  • Integral part of tile special education team when formulating IEP or 504 plans for medical issues concerning a student.

Job Title: Substitute Food Service Helper

Position Summary:

The Substitute Food Service Helper position is involves routine manual work performed under immediate supervision in connection with the preparation and service of food. On occasion Substitute Food Service Helpers may perform cooking duties involving lesser degrees of skill than regularly required of employees in the classification of Cook.

Essential Functions/Typical Tasks (Illustrative only):

The minimum performance expectations include, but are not limited to, the following functions/tasks:

  • Prepares and builds food and beverage items according to standardized recipes and directions
  • Assumes responsibility for quality and quantity of food to be prepared as directed
  • Properly stores food by adhering to food safety policies and procedures
  • Sets up work stations including prep tables, service counters, hot wells, steam tables, etc.
  • Breaks down, cleans, and sanitizes work stations
  • Serves food to students and staff while ensuring guest satisfaction and anticipating the customers’ needs
  • Replenishes food items and ensure product is stocked to appropriate levels
  • Maintains excellent customer service and positive attitude towards students, staff, co-workers, etc.

Job Title: Substitute Custodial Worker

Position Summary:

The Substitute Custodial Worker position involves routine and repetitive manual work calling for the efficient and economical performance of building cleaning and occasional minor maintenance tasks. Cleaning tasks are performed according to a well-established procedure and maintenance tasks are performed under direct supervision or according to specific instructions. Supervision is received from a Custodian or other supervisor. Supervision over the work of others is not a responsibility of employees in this class. Does related work as required.

  • Assists in the operation of oil, gas or coal fired low-pressure heating system including firing and removing ashes
  • Delivers mail and packages
  • Places and removes traffic safety signs
  • Arranges chairs and tables and other equipment for special use of building
  • Repairs window shares, replaces light bulbs, soap and towels
  • Paints rooms and equipment and assists in making minor plumbing, carpentry and electrical repairs
  • Other duties and tasks as assigned by manager

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of building cleaning practices, supplies and equipment
  • Willingness to perform routine cleaning and other manual tasks
  • Ability to follow simple oral and written instructions
  • Ability to get along well with others
  • Ability to perform minor maintenance tasks

Position Information:

  • Employment is on an as-needed basis.
  • Services may be needed for one day, one week, one month or longer.
  • All daily assignments are subject to possible cancellation (without compensation) at any time prior to the beginning of the workday.
  • Need for substitutes will vary from day-to-day and week-to-week and, as such, no guarantee can be given for work on any given day.
  • Supervised by Building or Program Administrator.
  • Employment is automatically discontinued effective June 30, unless the individual is reappointed for the following school year.
