PTECH freshmen and sophomores researched different kinds of cancer and showcased their findings at booths in the Jansen Avenue School gymnasium during the school’s Cancer Awareness Fair on Nov. 18.
Representatives from St. Mary’s Cancer Screening Services were on hand to provide information and signups for screenings they provide for those without health insurance.
The students provided information on how the cancers form, early warning signs, treatment, prevention and statistics.
Science teacher Jamie Dickinson was first alerted to her own thyroid cancer during last year’s Cancer Awareness Fair. “I learned about thyroid cancer from a student’s research, and then I knew what to expect going into the doctor’s visit,” she said. “Education is power. Fear comes from the unknown.”
