HFM BOCES Licensed Practical Nursing Program celebrated the graduation of 36 new nurses in a ceremony Thursday, June 16, at BOCES. Program Coordinator Michael DiMezza and LPN Advisor Julie McLeod were joined by the programs teaching staff to formally present diplomas and nursing pins to the graduates.

The “pinning ceremony,” a traditional welcome to the profession for graduate nurses, can be traced back to Florence Nightingale, who helped raise recognition of nurses to a professional standard, and was instrumental in launching one of the first schools of nursing, where a special pin was designed and awarded to nurses as they finished the program.

HFM’s LPN program prepares students to enter the field of nursing, filling a wide range of important roles in hospitals, nursing homes, physicians’ offices and more. The two-year program allows students to earn college credit that may be transferred to the Registered Nursing program at Fulton-Montgomery Community College.

Several students were selected for special recognition at the ceremony.
Jennifer Przybylowicz was awarded the Katy Mae Peterson Scholarship Fund Award, given to the deserving graduate who is continuing in a RN program.

Jessica Brosat received the Lexington Center Award as a graduate nurse who is also an employee of Lexington Center.

The Mountain Valley Hospice Award was presented to Patricia Hansen, as the graduate who has demonstrated perseverance in both the classroom and clinical setting.

Graduate nurses Jennifer Przybylowicz and Shannon Clark led the new graduates in the nursing pledge, called the Nightingale Pledge, again in honor of the nursing pioneer. The pledge is a modified version of the Hippocratic Oath physicians pledge to uphold. While the exact wording has changed over the years, the pledge concludes with the promise to “be devoted to service and to the high ideals of the nursing profession.”
