HFM teachers seek donations to provide meals for families in need

HFM BOCES’ Teacher Association’s PR Committee has provided holiday food baskets to families in need in the HFM family for more than 10 years. The helpful tradition continues this December and your generosity can help provide comfort to families in our communities.

Donations of money or food can be made before Friday, Dec. 11, to Karen Edwards at Jansen Avenue School in Johnstown. Checks should be made out to HFM BOCES TA and designated “holiday food basket” in the memo line.

PR chairperson Lynn Brown shops for food to supplement donated items, and then her students in HFM BOCES classes at Boulevard help put the baskets together as part of a learning and service project. Baskets will be assembled on Monday, Dec. 14, and then distributed.

Brown also reaches out to HFM BOCES classroom teachers to encourage students to get involved in food drives to ensure enough supplies exist to help everyone on the list. Any extra collected food is donated to a local food pantry.

Each food basket will contain a “main meal” made up of a 12-15 pound turkey or ham, 10 pounds of potatoes, five pounds of carrots, stuffing and brownies. Additional food includes cereal, peanut butter and jelly, bread, saltine crackers, pancake mix and syrup, rice, soup/ramen noodles, pasta and sauce, canned veggies and fruit.

Any questions may be addressed to Lynn Brown at 775-5740.
