Student Recognition Ceremony celebrates achievements and service

A full house of family and friends greeted more than 250 students – the second largest class of all time–graduating from HFM BOCES Career & Technical Center on Tuesday, June 21, 2016. The crowd had gathered to help celebrate the accomplishment on a warm, summer evening at Fulton-Montgomery Community College.

Career and Technical Center Director Jay DeTraglia opened the ceremony by recognizing the BOCES Board of Education, administrators and teachers for their contributions to the success of HFM BOCES career and technical programs. He thanked FMCC for hosting the event, this year celebrating its tenth year on the campus.

HFM BOCES Board of Education president David Edwards joined Broadalbin-Perth student Michael Deuel to lead in the Pledge to the Flag. Deuel, a Criminal Justice graduate, will enter the U. S. Marine Corps after school.

District Superintendent Dr. Patrick Michel congratulated the students and their families for their achievement, pointing out that every one of them was exceptional.

“You are the smart ones,” Dr. Michel told the students. “You took the time to get a set of marketable skills. You now have freedom to make choices most other high school graduates don’t have.”

He told the story of his barber, a young man who learned his trade at a BOCES, and was now setting out to move to Colorado.

Johnstown student Victoria Marie Baker (New Visions Health Careers) is awarded the Dr. Geoffrey Davis Award at the HFM Career and Technical Education Recognition Night, Tuesday, June 21, 2016.

He asked for applause for the faculty and staff of HFM BOCES, saying of 30 years work in education he had “never worked with a more phenomenal group of educators.”

Career and Tech Administrative Coordinator Michael DiMezza introduced the teachers from each of the 15 technical programs who recognized their students as they proceeded to the stage. High school seniors and adult learners shared the applause as they were honored for their achievements.
