What is a BOCES?

BOCES are educational institutions created by New York State to help public schools provide services. BOCES stands for Board of Cooperative Educational Services, which operate as an extension of local school districts and the State Education Department. New York State is divided into 37 BOCES regions. Although each BOCES is tailored to meet specific
local educational needs, all of them are based on cooperation, coordination, interdependence and shared decision making as they provide services to school districts.

About Fonda-Fultonville Central School District

A Good Place to Learn

2012-13 budget: $23,873,814

Enrollment: 1,450

Teachers: 112

Support staff: 58

Fonda-Fultonville Central School District traces its roots to the late 1700s, when students in both communities were educated in small, privately owned buildings. Around 1800, two formal school districts were formed, and for the next 150 years, Fonda and Fultonville operated those districts separately. In 1954, the two districts merged.

Today, the PreK-12 district serves more than 1,400 students on a single campus. A staff of nearly 170 teachers, administrators, aides, assistants, counselors, clerical and support staff provide a well-rounded educational program that emphasizes math, science and technology as well as music, art, humanities and athletics.

Like all small, rural schools in New York State, Fonda-Fultonville has faced the fiscal challenges of the times, making difficult decisions to preserve a sound education for its students. Strong community and staff involvement in the process has helped preserve district programs.

The Capital Region Business Review just placed Fonda-Fultonville among the top 20 schools in the greater Capital Region for the second year in a row, recognizing the quality of education provided by the small district.  [more]
