School
districts receive overdue tax checks
Hudson River-Black River Regulating District pays $1.7
million in delinquent taxes
SEPTEMBER 6, 2011
- Broadalbin-Perth Central School District, Mayfield Central
School District and Northville Central School District were
handed checks last week by Fulton County Treasurer Terry
Blodgett that satisfied unpaid tax bills by the Hudson
River-Black River Regulating District.
The three districts and Fulton County had to resort to legal
action to compel the regulating district
— a state agency that
administers the Great Sacandaga Lake
— to pay taxes it owed to the three districts
adjacent to the lake and to the county.
The regulating district lost a major source of revenue in
2008 when a court ruling prohibited it from charging fees to
downstate hydroelectric companies.
The New York State Supreme Court dismissed the school
districts' claim, but ordered the regulating district to pay
Fulton County the full amount due to it and the school
districts. Blodgett hand-delivered checks for $417,225 to
Broadalbin-Perth, $703,418 to Mayfield, and $617,911 to the
Northville Central School. |
