Nationwide
test of the Emergency Alert System to be held Nov. 9
November
4, 2011—The first nationwide test of the
Emergency Alert System will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 9, at
2 p.m. (Eastern Standard Time).
It will last approximately three minutes. During that time,
an audio message indicating that "This is just a test" will
be broadcast simultaneously on all radio, satellite radio,
television cable stations and wire line providers. Due to
limitations in the system, the video test message scroll may
not be the same or indicate that "this is a test."
Individuals who are not aware of the test may perceive it as
an actual emergency message, so district officials felt it
was important to make the public aware of the test ahead of
the testing period.
The Federal Communications Commission and Federal Emergency
Management Agency are conducting the test as part of their
ongoing efforts to keep our country and communities safe
during emergencies. The purpose of the test is to assess the
reliability and effectiveness of the system as a way to
alert the public during nationwide emergencies.
