New Literacy
Zone opens in Gloversville
Opportunities grow for adults to build better literacy and
job skills
GLOVERSVILLE -
New educational opportunities will abound when the Gloversville
Literacy Zone opens its doors in downtown Gloversville next
Tuesday, Feb. 7. A ribbon-cutting ceremony at 1:00 p.m. at the
Glove Cities Common Building, 43-47 Main St. launches the
program that offers expanded adult education options to
residents of the city and surrounding areas.
Educational services at the Gloversville Literacy Zone include
reading, writing and math assessments, as well as
skill-development classes in those areas. In addition, adult
learners can prepare for the GED® exam, brush up on college
readiness skills, and learn ways to support their children’s
success in school.
The Literacy Zone is a grant-funded pilot program by the New
York State Education Department to address literacy needs in
area communities. HFM BOCES administers the program, supporting
Literacy Zones in Gloversville and Amsterdam.
Services
provide adult education opportunities that help influence family
and community stability. By increasing and updating education
and employment skills, adults can be better prepared for future
training opportunities and the changing workforce.
Workshops are offered with the assistance of local partners to
provide information related to health concerns, better money
management, raising awareness of civic involvement, and other
issues requested by participants.
Online learning opportunities will soon be available for adults.
Computers and instruction on accessing online opportunities will
be available at the center, but once trained, users may connect
from any location at times that meet their needs.
Adults with a high school diploma, yet knowing they need to
improve their skills to be more competitive in the job market,
are invited to seek out assistance. Seniors citizens, veterans
and their family members, formerly incarcerated individuals, and
adults seeking to enroll in college or other training courses
are encouraged to explore services at the Gloversville Literacy
Zone.
Most classes are offered at the center. However, some
programming will be offered at the Gloversville Public Library.
Parent involvement programming is held at Park Terrace School.
The Literacy Zone grant was awarded to HFM BOCES on behalf of a
partnership including Gloversville Enlarged School District;
Fulton Montgomery Community College; Fulton-Montgomery-Schoharie
Workforce Development Board; WMHT Educational Television;
Gloversville Public Library; Literacy New York: Fulton,
Montgomery & Schoharie Counties; and many other local agencies.
Volunteers are sought to support technology learning and skills
development. To become involved, call the Gloversville Literacy
Zone at 725-3308 or 736-4340
