Alternative
High School invites you to Open House
Collaboration the key to students' academic success
Cooperation
between school, home, and community is essential for students to
learn and develop the skills and attitudes they need
to succeed after high school. Open House at HFM
BOCES’ Alternative High School brings students, parents and
teachers together to begin the process
on Thursday, Sept. 22, from 5-7 p.m.
Alternative High School Principal Thomas Flynn has personally
invited his students and their parents to attend, and encourages
area teachers, guidance counselors and administrators to visit the
HFM BOCES campus and learn about the programs and opportunities
available for area students.
Visitors at the Open House can meet teachers in their classrooms
to get an idea of a student’s typical day, and also
meet with the school counselor, social worker, and
administrators.
Mr. Flynn stressed the importance of the event as a chance for
parents to gain insight into this comprehensive educational
program, and involve themselves in their child's success.
“This is a great chance to create a partnership with our teachers and
staff,” Mr. Flynn said. “By working together we can better meet
the needs of our students.”
The HFM BOCES Alternative High School Program is specifically
designed to provide an educational option for students in grades
9-12 whose needs are not met by traditional secondary schools.
The program helps students earn a high school diploma while
maintaining the same academic requirements as their home
schools. Students are encouraged to make full use of the
learning environment through small-group direct instruction,
individualized achievement contracts, and a positive reward
system. In most cases, students are involved in a scheduled
school-to-work program.
“We have one primary purpose,” Mr. Flynn said. “We are here to
help students’ prepare for a successful and
productive life.”
