HFM BOCES puts spotlight on urgent need to raise graduation rates

For the 2010-11 school year, HFM BOCES maintains an initiative to help raise awareness among parents, educators and community residents about what causes teens to drop out -- and what we can do as individuals and collectively to boost graduation rates.

It's a serious problem

Across the nation, nearly one-third of high school students will not graduate – that’s 1.2 million students a year, or 7,000 each school day.

Regionally, the numbers are better, with 76 percent of high school seniors on average graduating each year in the HFM BOCES area.

But those numbers aren’t nearly good enough, not for the individuals whose opportunities are limited by their lack of education, and not for society as a whole.

Throughout the 2010-11 school year, HFM BOCES will continue to post resources to help area educators and parents work together to boost graduation rates.

Welcome Ryan Collins

Local educator joins HFM BOCES special education team

Ryan Collins, HFM BOCES Special Education Administrative CoordinatorHFM BOCES Special Education division has named Ryan Collins as its new Administrative Coordinator, filling a gap left when Tom Ciaccio resigned. Mr. Collins will oversee the special education program at Gloversville Middle School and High School.

Mr. Collins, a 1998 graduate of Fonda-Fultonville Central School District, is familiar with HFM BOCES. After graduating from Buffalo State University, he taught social studies in Mayfield for 8 years, and recently completed his administrative certification.

“I have always respected the BOCES concept and wanted to be part of it,” Mr. Collins said. “I look forward to working with the therapists, teachers, parents and students in our special education program.”

Mr. Collins’s charge in Gloversville oversees 13 classrooms covering the gamut of special education services offered by HFM BOCES. A second administrative coordinator, Dan Salvagni, directs equivalent programs at Canajoharie Elementary, Warren St. Elementary and Boulevard Elementary schools.
