Relay for Life steps off 14th annual local event tomorrow
HFM BOCES staff sponsors seven teams
June
2, 2011 - The 14th Annual American Cancer Society Relay for Life
of Fulton/Montgomery Counties will kick off its opening
ceremonies at 6:00 p.m., Friday, June 3, 2011 at Park Terrace
School in Gloversville.
HFM BOCES staff members make up seven relay teams for the
Relay for Life event.
The 24-hour event
begins with a celebration—an inspirational survivors' lap that
allows everyone to cheer on the victories achieved over cancer.
Teams camp out for
the overnight event and take turns walking or running around the
track to raise money and awareness that contributes to the
American Cancer Society’s efforts to create a world with less
cancer and more birthdays.
One important aspect
of the Relay For Life is the opportunity for people to come
together to remember loved ones lost to cancer and honor those
who have won their battle. The luminaria ceremony is one of the
most moving moments of the event.
Scheduled to begin
around 9:00 p.m. the track is lined with illuminated bags called
luminaria, each bearing the name of someone who has battled
cancer. The silence and each glowing light creates a touching
memorial for someone special who has been profoundly affected by
cancer and the family and friends who continue to fight back in
their honor.
We all would like to
know that we made a difference in the life of another person.
This year the HFM BOCES community has a unique opportunity to
make an impact on the lives of many.
To better understand
ways to prevent cancer, the American Cancer Society is
recruiting men and women across the US and Puerto Rico for a
landmark new research study—Cancer Prevention Study - 3 (CPS3).
CPS1 in the 1920s was the major study that discovered that
smoking tobacco caused cancer.
The third Cancer
Prevention Study will enroll participants—this
year only—at the Relay For
Life event this weekend.
Anyone that chooses
to participate will complete a brief questionnaire, give a waist
measurement and a small blood sample. Shortly after the
in-person enrollment, participants will receive a more
comprehensive survey at home. From that point forward, study
participants will be followed over time to update information
via periodic mailed surveys. Your involvement in CPS3 will help
researchers understand the causes of, and may ultimately
determine ways to prevent cancer.
If you are willing
to make the long-term commitment to the study (which involves
completing follow-up surveys periodically for the next 20-30
years), are between the ages of 30 and 65 years old, and have
never been diagnosed with cancer, then the American Cancer
Society wants you to participate in this study.

Whether its five
minutes to make a donation, or 30 years to contribute to a
research study, the impact we make together is much greater than
what any of us could do alone!
