HFM BOCES puts spotlight on urgent need to raise graduation rates

For the 2010-11 school year, HFM BOCES maintains an initiative to help raise awareness among parents, educators and community residents about what causes teens to drop out -- and what we can do as individuals and collectively to boost graduation rates.

It's a serious problem

Across the nation, nearly one-third of high school students will not graduate – that’s 1.2 million students a year, or 7,000 each school day.

Regionally, the numbers are better, with 76 percent of high school seniors on average graduating each year in the HFM BOCES area.

But those numbers aren’t nearly good enough, not for the individuals whose opportunities are limited by their lack of education, and not for society as a whole.

Throughout the 2010-11 school year, HFM BOCES will continue to post resources to help area educators and parents work together to boost graduation rates.

Commemorative plaques unveiled at Annual Meeting

Bronze memorials celebrate Dr. Geoffrey Davis’ contribution to HFM BOCES

Bronze commemorative plaque of Dr. Geoffrey H. DavisLittle more than a year from when Dr. Geoffrey H. Davis lost his courageous fight with cancer, HFM BOCES Board of Education unveiled a pair of commemorative plaques to honor his memory and contribution to the organization.

Dr. Davis served as District Superintendent from 1996-2010, and was a tenacious champion of an independent BOCES for Hamilton, Fulton and Montgomery Counties, and ardent advocate for the new BOCES campus built in 2005 adjacent to Fulton-Montgomery Community College.

The two bronze plaques were popular choices in an organization-wide survey of how best to remember Dr. Davis. The International Bronze Plaque Manufacturers & Designers Ltd. in Albertson, New York produced the pieces.

“We could not be more pleased with the results,” Assistant Superintendent Dr. Lorraine Hohenforst said. “Their solid, understated elegance is a visual testimony to the respect we hold for Dr. Davis as a man and as an educational leader.”

The main lobby memorial testifies, “His integrity, passion and vision united this region’s quest for educational excellence. Dr. Davis was recognized across New York State as a leader who garnered the respect of everyone who knew him. His distinguished legacy will be forever the cornerstone of the Hamilton-Fulton-Montgomery BOCES.”

A second plaque—mounted in the entrance foyer near the Conference Center— includes lyrics from a song, recognizing Dr. Davis’ love of music and passing the torch to the next generation of HFM BOCES leaders and students.

“It’s your world now;
Use well the time;
Be part of something good;
Leave something good behind.” (The Eagles)
