School Library System honors collaborative efforts
20th Annual Awards luncheon recognizes teacher and
administrator.
The
HFM BOCES School Library System (SLS) rewarded collaboration
between the administration, the classroom and the library media
specialist at its annual awards luncheon on Tuesday, May 24, at
HFM BOCES' Petit Café.
Northville High School teacher Anne Henck was named
Collaborative Teacher of the Year. Mrs. Henck teaches English to
grades 9 and 11.
Nominating Media Specialist Sharon Marie Perrella reflected on
Mrs. Henck’s “habit of collaboration” spanning more than 25
years in teaching.
“Anne and I have developed many collaborative projects, starting
with an ‘author project’ in the early eighties, and expanding to
research and literature projects and several in-depth novel
studies,” Mrs. Perrella said. “Promoting media literacy is a
mutual objective.”
The Collaborative Teacher Award measures efforts to integrate
projects into the curriculum and create cross—curricular
connections, reinforce classroom information skills, adjust
projects to benefit students with special needs, as well as
provide a means to critique and make recommendations for the
libraries collection.
Ms. Terry Dewey, Principal of the William B. Tecler Arts In
Education Magnet School in Amsterdam was named “Administrator of
the Year.” This award is given to administrators who “exhibit
leadership in recognizing the library media center as an
integral part of the total school program and have active
personal involvement in the program.”
Media Specialist Kristi Beedon stated in her nomination of Ms
Dewey that the principal “wanted an alive and active Media
Center.”
“The Library Media Center is an integral part of the total
school program at Tecler. Her support for the media program is
one reason that the media center has become the hub of activity
and a center for learning,” Mrs. Beedon wrote.
The Media Center is given complete flexibility in scheduling to
accommodate collaboration time with teachers on units of study,
open book exchange and computer lab time for students throughout
the day.
“We hear constant encouragement and a ‘Go for it!’ response when
new ideas are brought to her,” Mrs. Beedon said.
