Career & Tech
introduces new program for 2011-12
Engineering Technology program offers entree to future nanotech
careers
Starting in
the fall of 2011, area juniors will have the opportunity to earn
college credit while exploring careers in emerging technologies,
setting the stage for advanced training and job prospects in
many of the companies growing in Tech Valley.
Engineering
Technology is the newest two-year discipline added to HFM BOCES
Career & Technical Education division. The rigorous program is a
collaborative partnership between HFM BOCES, Fulton-Montgomery
Community College, and the National Science Foundation designed
to create opportunities for students setting their sights on
careers in engineering technology.
Coursework will
emphasize STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and
Mathematics) instruction, immersing students in emerging
nanoscale technologies. Students will also apply college-level
algebra, physics, and engineering principles to develop
systematic approaches to problem-solving and critical thinking
skills.
During a recent
community forum examining the growing impact of Tech Valley,
GlobalFoundries Director of Governmental Relations Mike Russo
explained how students well equipped with 21st Century skills
would have the advantage in the job market.
“GlobalFoundries is
employing the most advanced technology in the world,” he told
the audience of school and community leaders, parents and
students. “We want people that are good communicators, critical
and analytical thinkers, adaptable and creative.”
HFM BOCES students
in the Engineering Technology program will utilize FMCC’s Center
for Engineering and Technology laboratories, including the chip
fabrication clean room, robotics lab, and electronics facility.
They will be eligible to receive college credit through
Fulton-Montgomery Community college for the following courses:
Intermediate Algebra; Physics I; Physics II; Introduction to
Engineering; and Semiconductor & Fiber Optics Technology.
Students completing
the BOCES program will be primed to continue their engineering
studies in civil engineering; electrical/electronic engineering;
mechanical engineering; silicon wafer fabrication; analytical
lab technician; and environmental engineering.
