Superintendent search update
Board
of Education President Robert Townsend officially told the
opening day staff that the New York State Education
Department had authorized the search to begin for a new
district superintendent for HFM BOCES.
“Many of you may have heard the news this summer, but on
July 14, Commissioner of Education Dr. David Steiner
notified our Board of Education that HFM BOCES would remain
structured as we currently are, and that we could commence
the search for our next district superintendent,” Mr.
Townsend said.
The commissioner also appointed interim superintendent Mark
Vivacqua as the search coordinator. Mr. Vivacqua, the Board
and Assistant Superintendent Dr. Lorraine Hohenforst have
met and the beginning phases of the process are underway.
The chosen candidate will serve in a dual capacity: as
regional representative to the state Commissioner of
Education and as Chief Executive Officer of the
Hamilton-Fulton-Montgomery Board of Cooperative Educational
Services.
Potential candidates have until Sept. 15 to submit
applications to the board, according to a memo to BOCES
employees from Mr. Vivacqua outlining the process. After
screening and interviewing candidates, the board hopes to
narrow the pool to its final candidates in October.
The finalists will then meet with representative
constituency groups including component district
administrators, teachers, non-instructional staff, and
business and community leaders. The opportunity for these
groups to meet and question the final candidates will
provide important input to assist the board in making a
decision.
The two final candidates will meet with the Commissioner of
Education, and the HFM BOCES board may appoint the new
district superintendent after receiving official approval
from the Commissioner’s office.
“We are currently targeting the end of 2010 to have a new
district superintendent appointed, with a starting date
early in 2011, Mr. Townsend told the opening day audience.
“This is our #1 priority for this fall,” Mr. Townsend told
the opening day audience. “The board understands that this
is probably the most important task we have, and we are
committed to finding the very best candidate who will carry
the HFM BOCES mission forward.”
