Just
another stimulating, career-building, tech-savvy day at HFM
BOCES
Career and Tech Open House set for Oct. 7
Parents
who attend HFM BOCES annual Career and Technical
Education Open House are often surprised by the caliber
of training their child is receiving in the classroom.
It can be an eye-opening experience to discover how
familiar their son or daughter is with the latest
automotive, computerized, diagnostic equipment, or how
accomplished they are in computer networking, or
whipping up a roasted squash bisque.
Opening eyes to the facilities and opportunities
available at HFM BOCES is what Open House is all about.
Scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 7 from 5-7 p.m., the event
is a showcase of programs and the work students have
already accomplished in this new school year.
The Career and Tech staff hopes to welcome several
hundred students, parents, and guests to the event.
BOCES students guide their parents to classrooms and
work areas throughout the facility to see exhibits and
demonstrations of the 16 courses of study offered by the
Career and Technical Center.
Each classroom displays the training materials and
projects that teach the theory and practical knowledge
students need to succeed in their chosen field. But it's
the hands-on, student-led demonstrations of skills they
are mastering that are often the highlight of the
evening.
The open house gives parents the chance to ask questions
and discuss coursework with their child’s instructors,
while gaining a better understanding of the BOCES
programs.
The Career and Technical Center challenges students to
apply theoretical knowledge to practical situations
through 16 technical courses that integrate core
science, math and language arts academic skills with
technical instruction. The results are graduates well
prepared to pursue post-secondary education or to enter
the world of work, according to Career and Tech Director
Jay DeTraglia.
HFM BOCES serves 15 school districts in the three-county
area. Career and Technical Education programs teach
skills needed for careers in education, health care,
computer science, construction, criminal justice,
digital multimedia, equine science, food service,
cosmetology, auto technology and repair, and
environmental conservation.
