Exploring
future options the goal at HFM College Fair
Many opportunities for 'next step' after high school
While
few high school juniors know exactly what they want to do after
they graduate, it appears that many Career and Technical
Education students have a good sense of direction for the future
and some definite ideas of how to get there.
The HFM BOCES College Fair, held on Tuesday, Nov. 2, in the HFM
Conference Center, gave Career & Technical Education students
the chance to shop among more than 20 regional colleges and
technical schools for their best, post-graduation opportunity.
The college fair offered a chance for students to speak with
admission representatives from several New York State schools,
as well as to gather information on important decisions and
tasks that face students contemplating the next step in their
education.
Once students found a college that offered a program of
interest, most asked some common questions. What kind of
financial aid can I expect? What will your program equip me to
do? What is on-campus housing like?
Some
students gravitated toward schools that fulfilled a demographic
goal. It was not unusual to find students interested in schools
a significant distance from their home. At the same time, many
students wanted to find a college that made it easy to get back
home occasionally.
Johnstown junior Ashley Nichols, a student in BOCES’ Criminal
Justice program, was not entirely sure where her career path
would lead, but wasn’t anxious to move too far away.
“I’m close with my family,” Ashley said. “It’s important for me
to get home when I want to.”
Several students found their way to a specific college's table
because a family member or friend had attended and recommended
that particular school. Often a college’s name was familiar
through classroom discussions, and the College Fair was an
opportunity to match the actual school with its reputation.
"This is a great local opportunity to get information about a
number of schools in one place, at one time," said HFM BOCES
Career and Technical Education Counselor Kathy Daly.
