HFM BOCES puts spotlight on urgent need to raise graduation rates

For the 2008-09 school year, HFM BOCES has launched an initiative to help raise awareness among parents, educators and community residents about what causes teens to drop out -- and what we can do as individuals and collectively to boost graduation rates.

It's a serious problem

Across the nation, nearly one-third of high school students will not graduate – that’s 1.2 million students a year, or 7,000 each school day.

Regionally, the numbers are better, with 76 percent of high school seniors on average graduating each year in the HFM BOCES area.

But those numbers aren’t nearly good enough, not for the individuals whose opportunities are limited by their lack of education, and not for society as a whole.

Throughout the 2008-09 school year, HFM BOCES will continue to post resources to help area educators and parents work together to boost graduation rates.

Shared Decision Making Plan revised

Plan supports Board goals and student success

March 22, 2010 - A revised Shared Decision Making Plan has been adopted by HFM BOCES' Shared Decision Making Team.

The plan, a written resource required by New York State Education Department, is reviewed every two years. It explains the function and goal of the SDM team to support and promote division and Board of Education goals and help develop creative methods of improving the BOCES’ programs and services that lead to greater student success.

The SDM team reflects a partnership of administrators, teachers, staff, students, parents and community members committed to improving student achievement and fostering greater public involvement in the educational process.

The original SDM plan was adopted in 1994. When BOCES moved to its new facility in August, 2006, it was determined that the original plan no longer met its organizational needs. A new plan was developed that created a single SDM team for the entire BOCES made up of staff members from the multiple divisions. This newest revision continues to “fine-tune” the process and accountability of shared decision making.

Shared decision making is a process designed to involve individuals responsible for implementing decisions in actually making those decisions. The team focuses on issues such as students attaining NYS learning standards, BOCES programs and services, organizational communication, and community and public relations.
