Celebrate – remember – fight back

HFM BOCES Relay for Life teams seek support to fight cancer

logo graphicMore than 100 HFM BOCES staff members and their friends are preparing to take part in the 13th Annual American Cancer Society's Relay for Life event on June 4-5, and they need your help. Sponsoring a participant or team raises funds to help save lives from cancer.

The 2010 Relay for Life will be held at Park Terrace Elementary School in Gloversville beginning Friday, June 4. The overnight event begins at 5:00 p.m. Friday and concludes Saturday, June 5 at 7:00 a.m.

The American Cancer Society Relay for Life is a life-changing event that gives communities everywhere a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease. In addition, Relay for Life helps raise much-needed funds and awareness to help the American Cancer Society save lives from cancer and create more birthdays.

More than one BOCES team has formed to commemorate Dr. Geoffrey Davis, who recently lost his battle with cancer. Team Davis (Captain Allyson Warren) and Mission Possible (Captain Peggy Heise) are two HFM BOCES teams remembering Dr. Davis by their participation in the event.

At Relay for Life, teams camp out at a local high school, park, or fairground and take turns walking or running around a track or path. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event. Because cancer never sleeps, Relays are overnight events up to 24 hours in length.

If you are not walking, you can still be part of the team. Come to Park Terrace Elementary School on June 4 to celebrate the inspirational Survivors Lap that starts the Relay.

After dark, loved ones lost to cancer are remembered in a silent lap marked by the lighting of luminaries around the track, each marked with a name of a person touched by cancer. Support this worthy cause and encourage the HFM BOCES teams on the track.

Sponsorships in any amount are greatly appreciated and can be made by secure, tax-deductible online donation. To sponsor an individual participant or a team, visit the Relay for Life event page here, or speak to a HFM BOCES Relay for Life participant.
