Dr. Geoffrey H.
Davis dies from cancer
Served 14 years as HFM BOCES superintendent
JOHNSTOWN
– Dr. Geoffrey H. Davis, district superintendent of
Hamilton-Fulton-Montgomery BOCES since 1996, died Thursday, April
1, from cancer. He was 53.
“Dr. Davis’ death brings a great loss to not only our BOCES and
component school districts, but also to all of New York State,”
said HFM Board of Education President Robert Townsend. “His
leadership throughout his years at HFM has been instrumental in
building educational excellence for all students. His passion
for his work was the driving force throughout our region. He
will be dearly missed by all who knew him, but his legacy will
remain with all of us.”
Dr. Davis joined the HFM BOCES staff 14 years ago, leaving his
position as superintendent of the Little Falls City School
District to head up the tri-county Board of Cooperative
Educational Services based in Johnstown that serves 15 component
school districts in Hamilton, Fulton and Montgomery counties.
One of his first goals was to maintain the autonomy of HFM
BOCES, rather than merge with Herkimer BOCES. Dr. Davis
successfully completed this goal, with assistance and support
from staff, component school districts, community members,
elected officials and other supporters.
Dr. Davis is also credited with helping to build community and
legislative support for the construction of a new campus for HFM
BOCES on Route 67 in Johnstown, adjacent to Fulton-Montgomery
Community College. The new campus opened to students in
September 2006 – and made history as the first co-location ever
of a BOCES and a community college in New York State.
“Dr. Davis was hired to help reinvent HFM BOCES and the programs
and services we provide to our students and component school
districts,” said Assistant Superintendent Dr. Lorraine
Hohenforst. “He worked tirelessly and devotedly to improve
educational offerings for our students, and also partnered with
our school districts to improve instruction and boost graduation
rates throughout the region.”
Dr. Davis served as a mentor and advisor to area school
administrators, Dr. Hohenforst said. “This is a very sad day for
our BOCES and our entire region. He will be greatly missed.”
Dr. Davis is survived by his wife, Cindy, of Little Falls, and
children Justin, Jeremy and Alyssa.
The family will receive relatives and friends on Monday, April
5, 2010 from 2 - 6 p.m. at Holy Family Parish, corner of E. Main
and John Streets, Little Falls. Relatives and friends are also
invited to take part in a funeral service beginning at 6 p.m. on
Monday evening, also at Holy Family Parish. Final interment will
take place privately. In lieu of floral offerings kindly
consider memorial offerings to the Dr. Davis Memorial
Scholarship Fund. |
