Career and Tech Open House set for Oct. 14

Event offers parents a glimpse of typical school day

It is often an eye-opening experience for parents to discover that their daughter can drive a backhoe, or to learn how much their son really knows about the inner workings of a computer. The annual Open House at HFM BOCES Career and Technical Education Center can be filled with eye-opening experiences. Scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 14 from 5-7 p.m., the event is a showcase of programs and the work students have already accomplished in this new school year.

The Career and Tech staff typically welcomes several hundred students, parents, and guests to the event. BOCES students guide their parents to classrooms and work areas throughout the facility to see exhibits and demonstrations of the 16 courses of study offered by the Career and Technical Center.

Each classroom displays the training materials and projects that teach the theory and practical knowledge students need to succeed in their chosen field. But it's the hands-on, student-led demonstrations of the skills they are mastering that are often the highlight of the evening.

“Parents are often surprised to see the caliber of real-life experience their teens get in our classes,” said School Counselor Kathleen Daly.

The open house gives parents the chance to ask questions and discuss coursework with their child’s instructors, while gaining a better understanding of the BOCES programs.

The Career and Technical Center provides a stimulating learning experience in 16 technical courses that combine core academic skills in science, math and language arts with practical instruction to prepare students to pursue post-secondary education or to enter the world of work, according to Career and Tech Director Jay DeTraglia.

HFM BOCES serves 15 school districts in the three-county area. Career and Technical Education programs teach skills needed for careers in education, health care, computer science, construction, criminal justice, digital multimedia, equine science, food service, cosmetology, auto technology and repair, and environmental conservation.
