HFM BOCES puts spotlight on urgent need to raise graduation rates

For the 2008-09 school year, HFM BOCES has launched an initiative to help raise awareness among parents, educators and community residents about what causes teens to drop out -- and what we can do as individuals and collectively to boost graduation rates.

It's a serious problem

Across the nation, nearly one-third of high school students will not graduate – that’s 1.2 million students a year, or 7,000 each school day.

Regionally, the numbers are better, with 76 percent of high school seniors on average graduating each year in the HFM BOCES area.

But those numbers aren’t nearly good enough, not for the individuals whose opportunities are limited by their lack of education, and not for society as a whole.

Throughout the 2008-09 school year, HFM BOCES will continue to post resources to help area educators and parents work together to boost graduation rates.

Run-off BOE election set due to tie vote

Districts approve HFM BOCES budget and elects three board members

A run-off election will be held Tuesday, May 18 to break a tie vote and determine which of two candidates will finish the one-year term of a retired HFM BOCES Board of Education member.

On April 29, the 15 component school districts of HFM BOCES unanimously approved HFM BOCES' 2010-11 administrative budget of $2,343,178 and elected three members to the HFM Board of Education.

Three seats on the Board were available to be filled by three candidates. Two seats represented full, three-year terms, while the third was for one year, completing the term of retired board member Harry Wiggins. The candidate receiving the lowest vote total would assume the one-year term.

Robert Townsend of Broadalbin-Perth was re-elected unanimously to a three-year term. He has served on the Board since 1993.

Joanne Freeman of Johnstown and Jean LaPorta of Gloversville each received 13 votes.

Mrs. Freeman was elected by special election on Jan. 20, 2010 to complete the term of William Finch, who's seat had been vacated by his death.

The Board will hold a run-off election at their May 18 meeting to break the tie and determine who will assume the one-year term.

Board of Education terms begin July 1.
