HFM
Adult Home Study Program sets orientation dates
GRASP helps adults get a grip on GED preparation.
Adult learners have an available option to help them prepare for
the GED exam without attending regularly scheduled classes. HFM
BOCES will host a two-night orientation and screening session
for GRASP (Giving Ready Adults a Study Program) on Tuesday and
Wednesday, October 7th and 8th.
The evening sessions will begin at 6pm and end at 9 pm. at the
HFM BOCES. Students interested in the home study program must
attend both nights. The sessions will be held in the GED
classroom in the Alternative High School Wing.
Sometimes the circumstances of life get in the way for adults
trying to earn a high school equivalency diploma. Attending
classes around the challenges of childcare, work schedules, and
transportation issues can be a significant hurdle. GRASP is a
course of study that helps adults develop their reading and math
skills and prepare for the GED exam at home, at their own pace,
and under the supervision of experienced, certified teachers.
GRASP is a free program available to adults age 21 and older.
Learners must be disciplined to work independently, able to
dedicate six hours per week to studies, complete assignments on
time and exchange a packet of completed lessons every two weeks.
Tutoring sessions are available for students enrolled in the
program.
Screening and assessment determines the appropriate placement of
learners in programs. Adults with reading and math skills
between the 5th and 8th grade level will be enrolled in
Pre-GRASP to develop basic skills. Those with reading and math
skills between the 9th and 12th grade levels will be enrolled in
GRASP to prepare for the GED exam.
Lessons are provided in the five areas of the GED exam:
literature and arts, writing skills, mathematics, science and
social studies. Periodic testing will determine when a student
is ready to take the GED exam. Practice tests help learners know
what to expect, determine which skills they need to strengthen,
and build confidence.
Students use print materials, Internet resources, and record
television programming from local PBS affiliate WMHT to aid
their study program. Certified teachers provide guidance through
telephone contact, personal interactions and homework packets
that are designed for each student and exchanged at HFM BOCES
and other locations. Students are responsible for buying their
own books.
Anyone interested in attending one of the orientation sessions
must arrive on time with a photocopy of photo ID verifying his
or her age, along with a pen, pencil and paper.
