Area
schools gain access to TeachingBooks.net
Online service is designed to boost interest in
reading Every student,
teacher, parent and school library media specialist in the HFM
BOCES service area now has free online access to see and hear
the best creators of books for children and teens - thanks to
the HFM BOCES School Library System providing TeachingBooks.net
for the entire school community.
TeachingBooks.net is
an online service designed to generate enthusiasm for books and
reading by compiling original content and the best of the Web's
book and author resources all in one place. Original author
programs from TeachingBooks.net bring award-winning authors and
illustrators directly into libraries and classrooms, allowing
students to learn first hand how ideas, art and text come
together to create a book.
Featuring more than
1,900 author programs, original movies from TeachingBooks.net
are filmed in the studios of authors and illustrators and
include interactive slideshows, demonstrations and book
readings.
For example, see and
hear best-selling author of the Bunnicula books, James Howe,
talk about and read from Bunnicula; also, meet Leo and Diane
Dillon - collaborative illustrators of the Caldecott winning
titles Why Mosquitoes Buzz in People's Ears and Ashanti to Zulu.
TeachingBooks.net also
offers a wealth of K-12 multimedia literacy resources.
• Multiple book guides for specific
titles stimulate discussion and learning about books in the
classroom.
• Book readings allow students to hear
the rhythm and pacing of a book's text.
• Links to official author and
illustrator websites allow students to access biographies and
interactive activities.
Curriculum-aligned
resources that facilitate easy classroom integration are also
included with TeachingBooks.net. Author programs and material
pertaining to subjects such as art and math allow educators to
incorporate literacy throughout the curriculum.
In addition, the Web
site's Educator Area features more than 1,065 thematic
booklists, information on most English language children's and
young adult book awards and distinctions, including the
Charlotte Award, the New York 3 Apples Book Award, and the
Knickerbocker Award for Juvenile Literature.
"Anyone involved with
children's literature will love having access to
TeachingBooks.net," said Allison Wheeler, president of the
School Library Systems Association of New York State. "Author
studies are often used to encourage students to read, but many
school libraries can no longer afford to host on-site author
visits. Granting schools access to TeachingBooks.net allows
students to meet authors and illustrators every day, and enjoy
the experience as many times as they choose."
