Students in CDL training program are on the road to a new career
Almost every item you see at your local store arrived
there by truck. Trucks deliver everything from
automobiles to canned food. According to the American
Trucking Association, 70 percent of all freight tonnage
in the U.S. is moved by truck. This huge industry
supports more than nine million jobs, including nearly
three and a half million truck drivers.
As older truck drivers retire and the truck fleets
expand, the need for qualified drivers in the United
States is increasing. According to the U.S. Department
of Labor, the job outlook for professional truck drivers
is one of the fastest growing job segments.
The Commercial Drivers' license, or CDL, was created by
Congress to improve highway safety for everyone by
ensuring that commercial drivers of large trucks were
qualified to operate those vehicles.
If you are interested in pursuing a career as a truck
driver, consider the HFM BOCES CDL course, which offers
35 hours of comprehensive hands-on training in:
•
Defensive Driving Techniques,
• Safety and Emergency Procedures,
• Combination Vehicles,
• Brake Systems,
• CDL Brake Knowledge,
• CDL Hazardous Materials,
• Vehicle Inspections,
• Uncoupling/ Coupling,
• Straight Backing,
• Alley Dock Backing,
• Parallel Parking,
• Highway and City Driving, and
• New York State Licensing
Preparation.
In addition, HFM BOCES is the only school in the area that
guarantees each student private driving instruction with only
one student per truck. Most private schools place two, three or
even four students in the cab at one time, which substantially
cuts down on individual driving time. Ask yourself this
question: Can you learn to drive an 80,000-pound tractor-trailer
by watching? Probably not!
The cost for the HFM BOCES 35-hour on-the-road-training course
is $2,100, which includes one road test appointment with
tractor/trailer and instructor. Prior to the start of training,
all students must obtain a CDL A permit from the New York State
Department of Motor Vehicles,
Because CDL is considered a “demand” occupation, our program is
approved by the Workforce Investment Act (WIA) which allows
unemployed or dislocated workers to have all or part of their
training costs paid with state and federal funds, depending upon
eligibility. Sallie Mae Career training loans are also
available.
After students have successfully completed the 35 hours of
training, and receive their New York State CDL licenses, then
the “rubber hits the road” and the pay checks start to roll in.
