HFM BOCES Superintendent Dr. Geoffrey H. Davis was one of two local educational administrators to receive a national 2007 Cooperative Leadership award from the Capital Area School Development Association during the organization’s Annual Awards Dinner on April 19 at the Century House in Latham.

Given on behalf of the National School Development Council, the Cooperative Leadership Award is designed to recognize outstanding leadership within the study councils of the United States, including demonstrated success in improving student learning and performance through sound decision making.

Dr. Davis is a career educator with experience as a science teacher, assistant high school principal, elementary principal, junior and senior high school principal, and eight years service as a small city superintendent of schools before being appointed district superintendent of HFM BOCES in 1996.

Dr. Davis served as the chair of the New York State District Superintendents and chaired the “Snapshot of the Superintendency” research series for the New York State Council of School Superintendents, earning the Council’s “Appreciation Award” in 2002. Dr. Davis has been involved in matters of school policy and organization at the state and local levels, and often speaks on issues of school leadership.

Also receiving the 2007 Cooperative Leadership award was Dr. Raymond O’Connell, who recently retired as director of leadership research and development and as an adjunct associate professor in the Department of Educational Administration & Policy Studies at UAlbany. He joined the department after 25 years of experience in K-12 public education. Dr. O’Connell has served in both urban and suburban settings as a science teacher, elementary and junior high school principal, assistant superintendent, and superintendent of schools. Recently, he held the position of administrator for organizational performance with Questar III Board of Cooperative Educational Services.
