HFM BOCES offers training to prepare teachers
State makes changes in
Alternate Assessment procedures, test content
HFM BOCES has
scheduled a
Dec. 11
training for special education teachers to help them prepare
for changes in the New York State Alternate Assessments in
English Language Arts, math, science and social studies.
Districts are
encouraged to register all staff members who administer the
Alternate Assessment, even if they have given it before, because
there are significant changes this year.
New York State has
revised the data collection period which now begins Jan. 2, 2007
and runs through March 9. The revised schedule means educators
will have a later start – and a smaller window – to collect
student data for the Alternate Assessment.
Other changes
• The state has changed the birth
date criteria used to determine who is eligible for the
Alternate Assessment, so that the ages more closely approximate
the grade levels of their same-age peers.
• The social studies Alternate
Assessment will now be given in fifth grade, instead of fourth.
• The required evidence of task
completion no longer varies by grade level.
