A view from the inside: Parents become students for a day
Working side by side with their children, about 85 parents
and guests got a first-hand taste of the educational
programs offered at the HFM BOCES Career & Technical Center.
This
year’s “Bring a Parent/Guest to School Day,” held on April
27, provided an opportunity for parents and guests to chop
vegetables in the Culinary Arts classroom, use design
software in the Graphic Communications program, indulge in a little
pampering while getting their hair and nails done in the
Cosmetology salon, and far more.
The guest list that day included parents, grandparents,
aunts and uncles, and family friends.
“These hands-on experiences help parents better understand
what their children are learning and what the educational
experience is like here at the Career & Technical Center,”
explained CTC Director Jay A. DeTraglia.
“By shadowing their children throughout their day, parents
and guests can see for themselves what it’s like to be a
student here, what their children are learning, and how much
they are accomplishing.”
Another perspective
Parents
often can’t grasp the complexity of the course content, or
the maturity with which their children tackle their studies,
until they see it for themselves, Mr. DeTraglia said.
“I was happy to see my daughter in action,” wrote one parent
in a survey she completed at the conclusion of the program.
“She really enjoyed being the teacher, and I enjoyed
watching her exude so much confidence.”
The parents of a “Foundations of Food Services” student had
high praise for the educators working with their child,
noting that they “are doing a fantastic job not only in the
course work but also life lessons and building the students’
self esteem.”
For
many participants, this was their first chance to explore
the new HFM BOCES campus that opened last September. “Today
was a very nice experience,” wrote one parent who said she
was pleased “to see first hand exactly what our teenagers
are working on. It’s a beautiful facility, and I hope this
is something you will continue to do in the future.”
