What profession is projected to be the
fastest growing field in the United States?
According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the demand for
medical assistants will grow tremendously in the next six years,
making this a viable career opportunity for many of today's
students.
The HFM BOCES Career and Technical Center offers a Medical
Assisting Training Program that gives students exposure to both
medical office administrative duties and also the clinical
skills necessary to work with patients in a variety of health
settings. A medical assistant may secure a position as medical
officer worker, pharmacy technician, laboratory technician,
dental assistant, EKG or surgical technician.
According to the Department of Labor, some medical assistants
are trained on the job, but many complete a one- or two-year
program in a technical high school such as the Career &
Technical Center. Others go on to complete their programs at
post secondary vocational schools or community and junior
colleges. The training program at HFM BOCES
incorporates more than 180 hours of study in anatomy and
physiology, which may be considered for a third-year high school
science or health credit. Our students receive their training as
part of their high school curriculum. They are exposed to a
variety of medical careers before they pursue careers in more
specialized areas within the medical assisting field.
