Session 1 offerings

JoAnn Larson of NY State Ed.:

JoAnn will discuss AIS at the middle school level. This will be followed by a Q&A with the teachers.
Audience: Middle School Teachers

Earning College Credit in High School:

A panel of our own teachers will discuss four different ways of earning college credit in high school. Four programs will be discussed: Advanced Placement, FMCC College in the High School, and programs out of Syracuse University (SUPRA), and the University at Albany. The panelists will focus on the nuts and bolts of the programs and the positives and negatives. A Q&A will be part of this session. Audience: High School Teachers

Issues and Concerns in Transitioning Students from M.S. to H.S.:

Experienced teachers will lead a discussion of challenges in successfully transitioning students from middle school to high school. All school districts face common concerns and the goal of this session is to share and develop some common sense and usable strategies. Audience: 8th and 9th Grade Teachers
 

Session 2 offerings

JoAnn will update teachers on the most recent SED high school social studies information. A Q&A will be part of this session. Audience: High School Teachers

Middle School Information Share:

A panel of four teachers will share their best practices in a Q&A setting. Topics will include:
• Review packets for middle school state assessment
• Use of technology and literature in social studies
• Strategies to build the vocabulary memory of students
• Test writing strategies that match state assessments
Audience: Middle School Teachers

Session 3 offerings

Stock Market Game - Rick VonEhr, GASD

Successful strategies for using The Stock Market Game through the computer and Internet.
Audience: Grades 6, 8, 11, 12, ECO

Community Service Programs –Kyle Kilmartin, BPCSD

Understanding civic responsibility and the importance of volunteerism in a democracy are essential elements to any Participation In Government curriculum. This program will explore effective ways to develop and implement a hands-on community service element to your curriculum. The Volunteerism in a Democracy program will suggest ways for students to become involved in the organization and critiquing of the community decision making process.

Simulation Exercises - Ron Beck, GJSD

When I first started teaching I would see teachers using Simulations Exercises, but it did not really excite me. In 1999 I had the great pleasure of hearing Eric Rothschild give a presentation for AP classes using Simulation Exercises. I was very impressed and I took many of his ideas and incorporated them into my own. This presentation will show you how to do these exercises the correct way. We will be looking at: the Assassination of Andrew Jackson, the Assassination of Teddy Roosevelt and the College Admission's game. Audience: Grades 6-12

C-SPAN’s Network – Stu Palczak, GASD

This workshop will focus on how to use the C-SPAN network's vast array of primary source video clips in the classroom. They are current and historical, interesting and relevant, and can be used with all types of learners. Audience: Grades 7-12

Online Databases – Blake Smith, CCSD

Use your local library and on line databases to teach historic concepts in S.S. Audience: Grades 6-12

Students/Community Problems – Bob Harrison, GESD

How to prepare your students to identify problems in your school community, develop solutions to them, and implement these solutions. Audience: Grades 6-12

100% Student Completion –Bill Bowler, GASD

Using 12th graders as an example of teaching strategies that produce 100% student completion of classwork as well as student mastery of the material. Audience: Grades 6-12

Baseball and Integration – Doug Kaufman, GASD

The integration of major league baseball paralleled that of America. The stories of African-American, Hispanic, and Asian ballplayers are the focus of this workshop. Audience: Grades 7 & 8, 11 &12

Students as Teachers – Katherine Murray, GASD

Using student created lessons and materials for improved learning, motivation, and review.
Audience: Grades 6-12

Graphic Organizers – Grades 6-12 – Kelly Martin, GESD

Graphic organizers can be used in a variety of ways to improve student organization and performance. Audience: Grades 6-12

Multimedia & Technology – Len Martin, GESD

Participants will be presented with ideas on integrating technology into the Social Studies classroom including, but not limited to: PowerPoint, Video on Demand, teacher web pages, technology-based assignments, etc. Audience: Grades 6-12

Multimedia Hardware – Dave Clough, Ray Supply and Jeff Jennings, BPCSD

Presentation will include demonstration of multimedia cart and smartboard technology. Dave Clough, sales representative and educational technology expert, will demonstrate the benefits of this technology. A question and answer session will be included as well as up-to-date pricing for all of the items demonstrated. Classroom usage and logistical concerns will also be discussed. This seminar is a must for any school that may be considering purchasing any technology equipment.

Summer Travel Opportunities – Jennifer Wasserstrom, MCSD

Through programs such as Fulbright, Gilder Lehrman, Goethe Institute and the National Endowment of the Humanities, Social Studies teachers have the opportunity to travel throughout the world for minimal expense. Miss Wasserstrom will discuss the application process and her experience at the Pearl Harbor Memorial conference (July 2006), the Birmingham Civil Rights Conference (July 2007) and Race and Gender Conference (July 2007) and how she has incorporated these experiences into her classroom. Audience: Grades 7-12

The Power of Technology in the Classroom – Kermit Ackley, GESD

Developing PowerPoints that support the use of literature in social studies to motivate teachers and administration via professional development to create a “culture” of dynamic technology at the building and district level. Audience: Grades 7-12
