Session 1 Offerings

M1 – INTERACTIVE WHITEBOARDS - Andrew Ziemba, M.Ed., M.B.A., NY K-12 Educational Consultant, Logical Choice Technologies

In this hands-on, fun-filled session, participants will explore the “21st Century ACTIVclassroom,” featuring as its centerpiece the Promethean ACTIVboard interactive whiteboard. Using award-winning ACTIV studio lesson-design software in the area of middle school mathematics, we will explore sample lessons and activities that help students maintain focus and make teaching and learning truly interactive, collaborative, and enjoyable! Additional peripheral devices including the wireless ACTIVslate and fully-integrated ACTIVote student response system complete the Promethean ACTIVclassroom for a combination that can’t be beat. Don’t miss this one!

M2 – GEOMETER’S SKETCHPAD FOR NOVICE USERS (Sessions 1 & 2 – 9:00am – 10:45am) – Anne Zimmerman, Math Consultant

The Geometer’s Sketchpad is a computer program that allows students to interact in a real way with geometric terms that are mere abstractions on paper. Students and teachers are motivated to explore geometric concepts using a visual medium that demands mathematically correct labeling and interpretation of diagrams. We guarantee that you’ll have so much fun and learn so many things that you can be applied to your teaching that you won’t want to leave. Audience: Novice Users

M3 – USING THE TI-73 GRAPHING CALCULATOR FOR ALGEBRA (Sessions 1 & 2 – 9:00am – 10:45am)- Stacey Caurso-Sharpe, Lynch Middle School

Join in the fun activities that teach and reinforce concepts from the new Algebra curriculum which include the use of graphing calculators. Audience: Algebra Teachers

M4 – MATH ACTIVITIES – TEACHING ACTIVITIES THAT INCREASE MATHEMATICAL LITERACY - Irene (Sam) Jovell, Math Training Specialist, QUESTAR III BOCES

This session will give teachers many great techniques for helping students who are struggling with the many symbols, vocabulary and axioms of mathematics. Techniques for teaching students with disabilities will be shared. You will walk away from this session with resources that can be easily implemented in any classroom. Sam Jovell is a past-president of AMTNYS and is presently working for QUESTAR III BOCES as a math consultant.

M5 – SCHOOL ISLAND PRESENTATION (Overview) - School Island Representative

School Island is a web-site for students and teachers, providing content review and skill assessment activities for math, science, social studies, and language arts. Instant feedback and progress reports pinpoint a student’s strengths and weaknesses. Teachers can monitor their students’ use of School Island and even assign sessions tailored to the individual needs of AIS, special education, and accelerated students. This single-session training will provide a visual overview of this valuable resource for both teacher and students. Audience: Grades 6-12

M6 – 6TH GRADE BEST PRACTICES - Deborah Silvernail, Fonda-Fultonville Middle School

Do you feel like you’re working alone? Are you feeling isolated while trying to understand all of the performance indicators (P.I.s)? Do you have no one to get ideas from? In this session you will have an opportunity to share what you are doing to conquer the new curriculum with other math teachers at your grade level. Bring a favorite book, lesson, test, curriculum outline, strategy, project, or a really cool website. We will use our own teaching experiences to share with each other and not feel so isolated. Audience: Grade 6 Teachers

M7 – SOUNDS GREAT, BUT HOW DOES IT WORK? EFFECTIVE TEACHING STRATEGIES- Margaret Kelliher, Mohonasen High School

Participants will go through a few techniques that have worked in the classroom, including student white boards, “choose your own assignments,” polynomial dice. Practical, low-cost approaches for engaging the non-patient student will be emphasized. Audience: Grades 9-12

M8 – TEACHING WITH A TABLET PC – Billy Eipp, Northville High School

Teaching with a Tablet PC is a way to replace your overhead projector and integrate more technology into your lessons at the same time. This session will introduce a new method of presentation that may help simplify your life in the classroom and potentially give you some ideas on how you could teach more effectively. We will discuss the requirements and costs of Tablet PC and possible Projector options. Demonstrations on how I these tools to teach and a discussion of successes as well as ideas for the future. Audience: Grades 6-12

M12 - GEOMETER’S SKETCHPAD FOR INTERMEDIATE USERS – Anne Zimmerman, Math Consultant

If you are a teacher who already knows the basics of using The Geometer’s Sketchpad, you are invited to this session where you will experience methods of applying this program to instruction. You will walk away with at least four new lesson plans that teach the NYS core curriculum using this motivating computer technology. Lessons on transformational geometry, geometric proofs, and coordinate geometry will be included. Learn to make diagrams that can be copied and pasted into other word documents so that your tests and worksheets are accurate and professional. Audience: Intermediate Users

A representative from Curriculum Instruction and Instructional Technology at the New York State Education Department will discuss the implementation of new commencement level courses. The Mathematics Core Curriculum (revised 2005) will be presented along with supporting material available for districts to develop a coherent and consistent mathematics curriculum that is aligned with the NYS Standards. Audience: High School Teachers

M16 - MATH CONTENT IMPLEMENTATION – Judy Fantauzzi, Math Associate, NYSED

A representative from Curriculum Instruction and Instructional Technology at the New York State Education Department will discuss the Mathematics Core Curriculum (revised 2005). The presentation will include supporting material available for districts to develop to a coherent and consistent mathematics curriculum that is aligned with NYS Standards.
