Photo of two students who attend HFM BOCES Alternative High SchoolThe HFM BOCES Alternative High School Program has been specifically designed to provide an educational option for students from our component school districts in grades 9-12 whose needs are not met by our traditional secondary schools.

The program will assist students in attaining a high school diploma through maintaining the same academic requirements as home schools.

Students are helped and encouraged to make fuller use of the environment for learning by the use of small group direct instruction, individualized achievement contracts and a positive reward system.

In addition, most students will be involved in a scheduled school to work program.

The comprehensive educational program at the HFM BOCES Alternative School is founded on the following premises:

All students can learn - Important variables include: teaching, time on task, motivation, participation, practice and learning environment.

All students should learn - Education should prepare students for a successful and productive adult life. Every learning experience provided by this school is offered with the clear understanding that it promotes the growth and development of adolescents into successful, productive adults.

Every adult in the Alternative Education Program has one primary purpose: to have a positive impact on this learning-preparation process.

Comprehensive Tobacco Policy

The HFM BOCES Board of Education recognizes that the use of tobacco in any form poses serious short and long-term health risks to individuals. The Comprehensive Tobacco Policy remains in effect at all times, 24-hours a day, at all school activities on campus and off.

Annual notifications

Federal and state law requires school districts and BOCES to provide certain notifications to students and their parents or guardians. A summary of these notifications can be found here.

Important note regarding photos of students
in HFM BOCES publications:

The federal Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) allows schools to disclose certain “directory information” about students such as a student’s name, address, telephone number, date and place of birth, participation in athletics, honors and awards, photographs and dates of attendance unless parents have advised the BOCES to the contrary.

HFM BOCES uses this directory information in our publications (print publications, BOCES website, social media outlets) and to publicize our specific educational programs and student accomplishments to the electronic (television) and print (newspaper) media.

Parents not wishing information about their child to be used in district publications, releases to the media or on the BOCES website or social media should use this form, or write a letter to the principal of HFM BOCES Alternative Education program. The signed and dated letter should state that directory information about (name of student) should not be released under FERPA. You do not have to give a reason. This letter must be sent annually by September 30.
