Visual
Journals In addition to the creation of images,
it is important for the student to write responses to their
imagery. It doesn’t have to be a saga; simply a title and a few
sentences about where the idea came from or what they think
about it now that it is done.
Writing “will help…to use the power of
storytelling to give meaning to [the] images, connect
thoughts and feelings, and help [them] to discover personal
symbols over a period of time.” (Cathy Malchiodi)
These journal entries may be kept private or shared with a
trusted staff member or during counseling. Some of the questions
that you may ask or that the students may ponder are:
•
What feeling does the image communicate?
•
If the image could talk, what would it say?
•
What parts do you like best? Dislike the most?
•
Can you make another image in response to the
other one?
•
Can you create a safe place for yourself?
