Gloversville’s after-school program focuses on science
Science
comes to life for Gloversville Middle School students
participating in the 21st Century After-School Program.
Jessie George, a
7th grade science teacher at the school, leads the
after-school science lessons once a week. Students say they
love learning science with her, thanks to her infectious
interest in the subject. One recent lesson focused on bone
and joint identification, where animal bones and joints were
laid about the classroom, and students gave it their best
shot to correctly identify all specimens.
In other
lessons, students have dissected owl pellets, done golden
rod - gall dissections, investigated the behavior of
mealworms, and have identified bugs and plants while
enjoying a nature walk and scavenger hunt. Participants have
also studied the sun, the dichotomous key and plant
reproduction, and have used microscopes to udentify plant
and animal cells.
The Gloversville program also offers group counseling through
the Family Counseling Center for students with divorced or
separated parents.
Activities this spring included:
•
A St. Patrick’s Day party,
•
Career exploration at the HFM BOCES Career and Technical Center,
•
A 12-week library reading program that focused on short stories,
and
•
Six trips to Arterial Lanes for bowling lessons.
In addition, high school mentors continue
to work with the middle school students each week to
encourage peer connection and goal setting through quality
work. Also on the agenda are weekly trips to the Fox Run
Golf Course, where students receive hands-on instruction to
improve their golf games, plus a Family Night Dinner and
also a barbeque with a student/parent/staff softball game.
