HFM Information

Welcome to Bits & Pieces

Everyone needs to take a break occasionally, even if it is a virtual one. And if you found your way here, you are likely an employee of HFM BOCES.
The Shared Decision Team at HFM BOCES, in exploring ways to foster better internal communication, envisioned a "hidden" employees page, nestled among all the official news and information on this Web site, where visitors could see and share the behind-the-scenes information from the field.

The page is not really hidden. Once you are here, you can simply add it to the favorites on your browser. Or, you can find the link at the bottom of the official employee page.

ARCHIVE: What people really want to know

• Today is Flag Day.

• The best way to protect kids online: Talk to them.

• Why is the flag at BOCES at half staff so frequently?

• Why not have a Parents' Page where parents can find resources like day care, HEAP, legal aide, etc?

• Why are no special education students' pictures used at the top of the website like they used to?

• Does BOCES provide hand sanitizer and antibacterial soap?

News from the field...

Off-site summer computer users, take note!

Antivirus configuration change needed for out-of-building computer use

If you are using an HFM BOCES computer away from the BOCES building for more than a week this summer, please contact the Computer Services department (736-4394). A configuration change to the antivirus software on the computer is needed so it is able to get updates directly from Symantec while away from the HFM BOCES building instead of repeatedly trying and failing to get updates from the HFM BOCES servers.

It is very important that antivirus definitions are kept up-to-date since the newest viruses are most likely to successfully attack a computer. Those attacks are directed at newly discovered vulnerabilities that are probably not yet patched in software already on the computer (Windows, Office, Java, Adobe Reader, Flash, etc.).

If you have an Internet connection, we can do this update remotely. You will NOT have to bring your computer in to Computer Services.

FYI - HFM website will be down on July 14

Due to work being done by Time Warner Cable Data Engineering Department near the site of our Internet hosting server, the HFM BOCES website may be unavailable for a short period on Wednesday, July 14. The expected outage is scheduled for the hours of 5-7 am, and should last only 10-15 minutes.

Another retirement incentive for New York educators

New York State Teachers Retirement System is currently administering two retirement incentives: Chapters 45 and 105 of the Laws of 2010.

Chapter 105, signed into law June 2, 2010, provides NYSTRS participating employers with the option to offer Part A or Part B, or both parts. School districts may also elect not to offer either part of the incentive.

Part A provides one-twelfth of a year of additional service credit for every year of credited service, to a maximum of three years of additional credit. To be eligible, members must waive any local retirement incentive and be age 50 or older with 10 or more years of service, or age 55 with five or more years of service.

Part B allows Tier 2, 3 and 4 members who are at least age 55 or older with a minimum of 25 but less than 30 years of service credit to retire without an age reduction.

Chapter 45, the 55/25 retirement incentive for educators represented by NYSUT, was signed into law April 14, 2010.

Share your summer activities with HFM family

What is your hobby? Do you paint, quilt, sculpt, play saxophone in the citizen's band? We would like to know about it, whatever it is, especially if you will be participating in a summer arts fair, concert or other activity. Send us a photo of you and/or your art, and where we may see it on display. Dates and locations will be posted here, letting us learn a little more about our co-workers, and giving everyone in HFM BOCES a calendar of fun, local events to attend this summer.

Send your information and photos to tantis@hfmboces.org.

Great job HFM Adopt-A-Highway crew!

The HFM BOCES-wide Adopt-a-Highway crew hit the highway on Monday, May 24, 2010 to take part in a clean-up effort on a stretch of Route 29.  Reports from the field indicate they did a noteworthy job.

The crew "did a fantastic job in cleaning up Rt. 29. I came to work this morning and there were full bags of garbage on every intersection. Good job. It was a hot one but they still did the job well." (Bits & Pieces blogger)

Coordinator Michael Andrews praised the hard work of everyone that participated and said he was looking forward to another successful clean-up in the Fall.

Anyone interested in participating in the next clean-up effort can contact Mike at mandrews@hfmboces.org or 736-4330, ext. 6366.

What would you like to see on this page to make it more valuable for you?

In terms of a 'forum' (see comment below. ~ed.), there are many really good listservs being done through the www. Especially useful are the secondary math and science ones. Google your content area/specialty and see what you find!

It might be nice to have a "forum" type place, where teachers/related service providers, etc. could ask questions to one another (i.e., behavioral issues, classroom issues) or list their curriculum materials. Just a place to share ideas or find new ones! (Interesting! We'll look into it. ~Editor)

I read it and would like to see more people involved. I like to read other people's thoughts and answers to the questions. (We would like to read other people's thoughts and comments too. We post every comment we receive. ~Editor)

Yes I do read it. I'm not really sure what you could add to it - maybe copies of letters and notifications that go out to all employees.

Perhaps links to conferences or places to find more information on conferences. (What type of conferences? ~ Editor)
