Who decides when there will be a snow day?

Squirrel in the snowClosing HFM BOCES is not a simple decision. Because we serve 15 component school districts, any decision to close is based on circumstances and decisions made in those other districts.

But there is a multi-step process that takes place any day that weather poses a threat to student safety.

Career and Technical Center Director Jay DeTraglia is HFM BOCES' "point person" with the districts. Each school district calls Mr. DeTraglia with their decision to delay or close when conditions warrant. Five local districts - Amsterdam, Broadalbin-Perth, Johnstown, Gloversville and Fonda-Fultonville - drive the decision for HFM BOCES to cancel educational programs for the day.

If at least three of these five districts delay their start time or close altogether, HFM BOCES will follow suit. Mr. DeTraglia then notifies local media, and initiates the internal emergency call list system that ultimately notifies HFM BOCES employees of the situation.

Unless local roads are deemed unsafe for travel by county authorities, the HFM BOCES staff is expected to report after a two-hour delay when programs are cancelled for the day. Our grounds crew turns out early and gives particular emphasis to clearing employee parking lots.

Any employee that feels that travel would be unsafe and does not want to come in may use a vacation day. When a "snow day" is declared, teachers and aides enjoy the day off with no impact on their vacation days.

During severe weather conditions, Dr. Davis or his designee may close HFM BOCES completely, and all staff may stay home.
